Decoded data is always written in pairs within this decoder.
This fixes writes out of bounds.

The loop a few lines below the xan_unpack() call accesses up to
dec_size * 2 bytes into y_buffer, so dec_size must be limited to
buffer_size / 2.

The prefix is a historic remnant that probably meant "alternative".
Now that the A32 bitstream reader has been dropped it makes no sense anymore.
