The old reduction interface will remain available. New mechanism for configuring external libraries: External libraries, such as e.g. HDF5 or LAPACK, can now be configured via configuration scripts within thorns, instead of relying on the central Cactus configuration mechanism. This simplifies interfacing to non-Cactus libraries. A set of new thorns in the CactusExternal arrangement use this mechanism. The old configuration mechanism is still available. Cactus documentation format changed to PDF: Documentation is now produced as pdf files (instead of postscript). Figures in thorn documentation directories need to be updated from eps to pdf as well. Core Thorns =========== CactusBase/InitBase: A new thorn CactusBase/InitBase helps ensure that initial data are set up correctly on all time levels. The cygwin port has been updated to use the cygwin Perl rather than the ActiveState Perl, making installation easier. The support for the Intel compilers has been fixed. - We have tested Cactus on three new architectures, the SGI Altix, Intel's new Extended Memory 64 Technology, and Microsoft's XBox, all running Linux. New Reduction Interface - The reduction interface has been brought into line with the interpolation interface. The old reduction interface will be deprecated now and will be removed before Cactus 4.0.0. Core Thorns =========== Method of Lines - The Method of Lines (MoL) thorn has been moved into the CactusBase arrangement. This thorn provides a generic mechanism to evolve equations using the method of lines. The CactusExamples arrangement now contains example thorns. ============================================================================== KNOWN BUGS IN BETA 15 ===================== (See Cactus bug tracking system for a complete list) ============================================================================== WHAT TO EXPECT IN BETA 16 ========================= The configuration for extra packages such as HDF5 or PETSc will be moved into thorns, using the configuration.ccl mechanism. This should make it less necessary to recreate a configuration, considerably reduce recompilation times when the packages are added or removed, and make the addition of new packages more straightforward. With the new reduction interface in place, all thorns in the standard release will be updated. When an implementation A inherits from another implementation B, all variables it inherits will be also inherited by any other implementation, C, say, inheriting from it, and all thorns providing A must also inherit from B. We intend to add the concept of private inheritance so that a thorn providing B may inherit from A without requiring all thorns providing B to inherit from A. We noted various problems during this beta release, in particular failures of the new reduction interface with MPI on several architectures, and consistent failure of some test suites. These will be investigated and fixed. We hope to test be able to include the Cray X-1 as a new supported architecture in the next release, and possibly the IBM Blue Gene. Thorns may "provide" a number of capabilities which other thorns may then "require"; only one thorn providing a particular capability may be compiled in at once. This will in the future allow much of the functionality now in lib/make/extras to be moved into thorns, and paves the way for the addition of other languages. Note that this should not be used as a general way to provide inter-thorn dependencies as it does not allow the runtime swapping of functionaly equivalent thorns that is possible using the inheritence and function aliasing mechanisms. Core Thorns =========== Boundaries and Symmetries - the boundary condition infrastructure has been reworked to make a clear distinction between physical and symmetry boundary conditions. Coordinates and Symmetries - these have also been re-worked to clarify the distinction; it is an ongoing process which will be completed sometime in beta 16. The basic idea is that we have two basic thorns (already written) CoordBase - Maintains a registry of coordinate systems on a per-GH basis - Thorns providing specific coordinate systems register them with it, providing coordinate systems for GFs and possibly GAs. - There can be a default coordinate system associated with the GFs. Flesh ===== Key/value tables: A standard API to store, query and, pass around key/value tables. A table holds a set of key/value pairs, where the key is a character string and the value may be a scalar or 1-dimensional array of any Cactus data type (character, integer, real number, or complex number). The table API will be used by other Cactus APIs such as hyperslabbing, reduction, interpolation, and I/O thorns to pass optional information. (There's a new chapter in the User's Guide on how to use the table API.) Vector groups: Can have a group of variables which appears as a one dimensional array of the sources, with the number of GVs in this group decided at run time. Additions of array sizes: can specify sizes by integer constants or parameters (from same thorn or shared parameter) which may be used in arithmetic operations (using *,+,/,-,%,^) Scheduler: STORAGE lines in the schedule.ccl file must now indicate how many timelevels to use, for grid variables with more than one timelevel. Array parameters: A parameters can now be an array of values instead of just a single number. Accumulator parameters: A parameter value can now be automatically built from the values of other parameters. Parameter aliasing: Parameters can now be given a different name from their original definition in the sources, or other thorns which use them. This can be used to prevent conflicts when using or extending a parameter from another implementation. TAGS on groups: Groups can now have an optional tags table (a set of key value pairs) associated with them. These can be queried and manipulated through the standard table interface. Util Thorns =========== CactusBase/LocalInterp: This thorn provides interpolation local to a processor. It includes the former PUGHInterp CCTK_InterpLocal() interpolator, and a new CCTK_InterpLocalUniform() interpolator. CactusConnect/Socket: This thorn provides platform-independent socket I/O functionality which can be used by other thorns. Thorns CactusConnect/HTTPD and CactusPUGHIO/IOStreamedHDF5 now inherit from thorn Socket. New I/O thorns: IOHDF5, IOHDF5Util, IOStreamedHDF5, and IOPanda were moved from their development arrangements into production mode. They provide new I/O methods for output of arbitrary grid variables (and hyperslabs thereof) in HDF5 and IEEEIO file format. [If you are using any PUGH infrastructure please make sure you keep up to date with CVS commit messages for the thorn since this thorn will now be revised and tidied] Multidimensional arrays (1D, 2D, 3D) are now working. Arrays can be set to have any size, and any ghostzone size in a thorn's interface.ccl. At the moment the sizes must be specified with parameters. Currently Sychronising of ghostzones works for 1D and 3D, but not for 2D. This will go in as PUGH is revised for the next beta release.
